Napoli in new assault on Arsenal star

Napoli are lining up a fresh assault on Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen, Il Corriere dello Sport is reporting.

The Azzurri are short of options at the heart of defence and plan to add a high-quality central defender by the end of the January transfer window.

According to Il Corriere dello Sport, Napoli are set to reignite their interest in Arsenal stopper Thomas Vermaelen.

Rafael Benitez rates the player highly and believes he will succeed in luring him to Stadio San Paolo.

The Belgian has fallen behind Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny in the pecking order at the Emirates and he could be tempted by the proposal from Napoli.

Thomas Vermaelen only started 3 Premier League fixtures this season, while making another 4 substitute appearances.

Meanwhile, Arsenal continue to lead the chase in English Premier League and are available at 7/2 to lift the league trophy for the first time since 2004.
