Serie A hotshots Napoli are in the market for a new goalkeeper who is expected to replace Pepe Reina between the sticks.
The experienced Spanish stot stopper has joined AC Milan as a free agent after his contract with Napoli expired and Partenopei have since then been linked with a number of targets such as Petr Cech, Rui Patricio and even Real Madrid custodian Keylor Navas.
The latest reports coming from TV Luna, however, have it that Napoli have identified two main goalkeeping targets – PSG’s Alphonse Areola and Alex Meret of Udinese.
Carlo Ancelotti has already worked with Areola at PSG and is likely to use his personal relationship with the goalkeeper to try and lure him to the south of Italy. With French heavyweights close to bringing Gianluigi Buffon on a two-year deal, Areola is likely to change clubs in pursuit of regular playing time.
As for Meret, the 21-year-old Udinese prospect has emerged as one of the most talented goalkeepers in Italy. He’s already been dubbed the ‘heir to Buffon’ but a switch to Napoli might come too soon for his at this point in time.
