Serie A leaders Napoli are actively searching for defensive reinforcements.
With Faouzi Ghoulam ruled out with a lengthy injury Partenopei are forced to make a move this January and improve their options at the back.
Atletico Madrid defender Sime Vrsaljko has been mentioned as one of the top January targets for the Italian hot-shots but the Portuguese media outlet Abola reports that Partenopei are also monitoring other options as well.
The 22-year-old Spanish defender Alex Grimaldo is said to be highly-rated by the Italian side who are already exploring an option to grab the former Barcelona graduate.
Grimaldo made only 6 Primeira Liga appearances for Benfica this season and could be allowed to leave Lisbon in search of regular playing time.
The Spanish defender is said to have a €40 million release clause in his contract but Napoli are hoping to cut the price in half and have already submitted an offer worth €20 million, according to Portugal daily news Abola.
Having Grimaldo’s current first-team status and the fact he is not featuring regularly, Benfica could choose to accept a cut-price deal for a player they paid €1.5 million for back in 2015.
