A guaranteed return to European competition was just one benefit Walter Mazzarri said Napoli will gain from making the Coppa Italia final.
Napoli booked their spot in the decider in Rome against Juventus with a 2-0 win over Siena in the second leg of their semi-final on Wednesday.
Having lost 2-1 at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, Napoli went through 3-2 on aggregate, courtesy of an early own goal from Simone Vergassola and an Edison Cavani strike just after the half-hour mark.
Napoli will now face Juventus in the tournament decider and, given Juventus are currently battling it out for the Serie A title and are almost certain to finish in a Champions League place, Mazzarri’s men have effectively guaranteed themselves a place in Europe next season.
“I must congratulate the boys, who gave everything,” he said. “We are happy at having reached the final and we are confident that the Olimpico will be half-filled with Napoli fans.”
“With this result, moreover, we are sure to return to Europe next season.”
However, Mazzarri admitted he was deeply concerned by the injury which forced full-back Christian Maggio to leave the pitch.
“I am worried about the rest of the season, because we will miss him,” Mazzarri said. “We fear that he has a muscular problem and there is a risk that we are going to be without him for a while.”
Napoli must now turn their attention back to Serie A, with Catania due at the Stadio San Paolo on Sunday.
