Arsene Wenger hailed the efforts of Samir Nasri after his brilliant double against Fulham sent Arsenal top of the English Premier League.
The French midfielder was the difference between the two sides in a tense struggle at the Emirates Stadium; his goals helping Arsenal to a 2-1 win over their London rivals.
With Chelsea being held to a 1-1 draw by Everton, the win moved Arsenal one point clear of Manchester United – who have game in hand – at the top of the Premier League standings, and Arsenal boss Wenger was quick to lavish praise on his compatriot.
“He needed to be patient to finish on both occasions and he did that very well,” Wenger said.
“It was a combination of touch, intelligence, special talent and calmness as well.”
“Now he has more variation in his game – turns, runs in behind without the ball, and as well coming to the ball and taking it to his feet.”
“So his game is improving and he is, of course, more efficient.”
“Many people questioned me when I took him here but he is showing that he is an exceptional talent and I think there is more to come from him.”
While pleased to be riding high on top of the league table, Wenger insists the competition for points in the Premier League is as tough as it has ever been.
“As you see, every single team struggles to be consistent,” Wenger said.
“At the moment, we are where we are despite having lost three games. Today, you could see again every game is a cup final. And if you’re not completely up for it, you don’t take the three points.”
Fulham boss Mark Hughes said he was pleased with the commitment of his players, but was disappointed to leave Emirates Stadium empty handed.
“We took the game to Arsenal today and caused them real problems,” Hughes said.
“At the end of the game the crowd were asking for the final whistle which illustrates how well we pressed and asked questions of Arsenal. Unfortunately we haven’t got a reward.”
“Overall we’re pleased with what we produced today. I thought there were some really good performances.”
“I think we showed real belief in what we’re trying to do.”
“What we can produce when we play well gives me confidence that we won’t have a problem this year. Obviously we’re missing key personnel in the attacking department and that will always hurt us but hopefully we’ll start getting players back.”
