Sami Nasri has been named France’s Player of the Year, beating off competition from Florent Malouda.

Arsenal midfielder Nasri, 23, took out the French Football Association’s top individual award ahead of Chelsea’s Malouda in second and Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who finished third.

Nasri was chosen by several former France players, including Raymond Kopa, Marius Tresor, Alain Giresse, Jean Tigana and national team manager Laurent Blanc.

The former Marseille man collected the honour despite being left out of former national team manager Raymond Domenech’s 2010 World Cup squad.

Nasri may have benefited through his absence, as the squad disgraced themselves by staging a training revolt before exiting at the group stage in South Africa.

UEFA President and France great Michel Platini abstained from voting due to the now infamous player revolt.

“The best French players were in South Africa but, after events there, none of them deserves inclusion in a role of honour including names as prestigious as Kopa, Gondet, Carnus, Tresor and Blanc,” Platini said.

Nasri has been in excellent form for Arsenal in the first half of the season, scoring eight goals to help the Gunners to second in the table.

Marseille coach Didier Deschamps was named Coach of the Year, Paris Saint-Germain’s Nene was voted best foreign player while Rennes’ Yann Mvila took out the Young Player of the Year award.
