With centre-back Joel Matip ruled out for the season through an ACL injury, Liverpool are considering keeping Nat Phillips as defensive cover, according to multiple sources, while they search for loan options for Rhys Williams and attacking midfielder Fabio Carvalho.
Back in 2020/21, Phillips and Williams played a big role as Liverpool earned Champions League qualification, with Matip, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez all missing a majority of the season.
Phillips (26), Williams (22) and Carvalho (21) have all had their loan spells with Celtic, Aberdeen and RB Leipzig, respectively, cut short. And while Liverpool can afford to send Williams and Carvalho elsewhere for the second half of the season to rack up some vital game-time, it seems Phillips staying put to replace Matip in the squad might appeal to them more than signing a new player for the role this month.
With the team involved in the Premier League title race, a place in the Carabao Cup semifinals, a place in the Europa League round of 16 and about to start the FA Cup campaign against Arsenal on Sunday, depth will obviously be a very important factor for Jurgen Klopp’s squad.
