Ajax skipper Luis Suarez’s neck-biting attack on a PSV player has cost him dear with the Dutch Football Federation (KNVB) banning the Uruguay international for seven domestic games on Wednesday.
The suspension means Suarez will be sidelined until February 4.
The KNVB’s punishment will run concurrently with the two match ban already handed out to Suarez by his club which also levelled a “heavy fine” on the forward.
The 23-year-old saw red in Saturday’s league tie when he bit the neck of PSV’s Otman Bakkal.
The two players had argued with Suarez taking direct action after Bakkal had stood on his foot following a red card received by Ajax’s Rasmus Lindgren.
Despite the incident, Ajax fielded Suarez in Tuesday’s Champions League game against Real Madrid, which the Dutch side lost 4-0.
And Martin Jol’s club will also be entitled to play him against AC Milan in the Champions League in two weeks.
At the World Cup in South Africa this year Suarez received a one-match ban for his goal-line handball clearance in his country’s quarter-final against Ghana.
The offence resulted in a penalty in the last minute of extra-time but Asamoah Gyan sent his spotkick crashing off the crossbar to give the Uruguayans a reprieve which they exploited by prevailing 4-2 in the ensuing shoot-out.
Uruguay went on to lose their semi-final against Holland 3-2 to finish in fourth place after Germany beat them 3-2 in the third place play-off.
