Having been an important member of the his Premier League winning team at Chelsea, the Serbian midfielder followed Jose Mourinho to Old Trafford in 2017, a year after the Portuguese tactician had arrived.
Things didn’t work out as well as expected for Mourinho though, or initially for Matic himself. Things began to change when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took the reins, and the 31-year-old’s defensive prowess and strength came to the fore with the addition of Bruno Fernandes’ creativity into the mix. The former Sporting Lisbon man has been an instant hit, and with Paul Pogba now fully fit, Matic seems like a natural ingredient that provides cover for the two forward-thinking midfielders.
His old contract was about to enter its final 12 months, so it was only logical for United to extend his stay and he is now committed to the club until the summer of 2023. Solskjaer believes his experience and professionalism will be invaluable to the development of younger players in his squad.
