Saturday’s crucial Group A game between Denmark and the Netherlands, ended in a 2-1 victory to the Dutch who as a result finished second and secured their spot in the quarter finals.

Both teams began this game knowing that a win would see them through to the quarter finals, while a defeat may well prove to be fatal.

Close to an hour had been played in the city of Lahti when the Netherlands went ahead through Sylvia Smit, who volleyed past keeper Johansen from the edge of the box.

And the Dutch doubled their advantage when Manon Melis curled a free kick past the opposing goalkeeper eight minutes later.

The Danes got one back five minutes later as Johanna Rasmussen found her way through the defense and beat keeper Geurts for 1-2. Although the goal wasn’t enough to draw this game, it may be vital in the race to become one of the best two numbers three.
