Leading 1-0 through Rolland Sallai’s 32nd-minute strike, Hungary appeared to be on their way to a huge UEFA Nations League victory over Netherlands on Friday evening, especially after Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk earned his second yellow card in the 79th, just two minutes after his first. However, Denzel Dumfries managed to equalize for the Dutch in the 84th, making sure his team did not walk away from the match empty-handed.
Referee Lukas Faehndrich from Switzerland booked Van Dijk for protesting as the Liverpool defender deemed Attila Fiola’s foul on Donyell Malen warranted a straight red cad, and speaking to the press after the match, Van Dijk said the booking had left him bemused as he believed he, as the captain of his team, was allowed to speak to the referee in such situations. But he had little objection to the second booking, which he received for a late tackle on Hungary substitute Kevin Csoboth.
