PSV Eindhoven defender Erik Pieters is interested in a summer move to Newcastle, the player’s representative has revealed.
The Dutch international, who is currently struggling with a foot problem, was recently linked with a summer switch to St James Park.
The player’s agent has moved to reject speculations that Newcastle have made an official approach, but admits his client wouldn’t be able to resist the temptation of joining the Magpies.
“He was interested last year,” agent Piet van der Pol told the Newcastle Journal.
“Newcastle United is a fantastic club and I know that Erik follows them because of his friendship with Tim Krul.
“If they come in for Erik of course he will be interested in talking to them, but right now the main thing that he is focused on is getting fit for Euro 2012.
“Newcastle have done tremendously this season and I know that there are a lot of players who would like to join them.”
The Premier League outfit tried to sign Pieters as a replacement for Jose Enrique last summer, but eventually opted for Davide Santon.
However, they haven’t given up hope of signing the 23-year-old and are expected to make a fresh bid in the summer transfer window.
The highly rated defender has mostly been used as left-back at PSV Eindhoven but he is equally adept at centre back, with the player’s versatility one of the reasons why Newcastle are keen on his services.
