FC Twente brought the gap with Dutch leaders AZ Alkmaar back to nine points thanks to an away victory at Sparta, while Ajax struggled past Volendam to defend their third place.

An own goal from Sander van Gessel put Twente in the lead after just four minutes at Rotterdam’s ‘Het Kasteel’ stadium.

Ruud Knol then equalised just after the half hour mark but Theo Janssen saved the day for the visitors, netting for 1-2 in added time.

Ajax hosted last-placed Volendam and conceded a goal from Gerson Sheotahul after 15 minutes. Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez levelled in the 29th minute however and Thomas Vermaelen earned his side a hard-fought victory, scoring for 2-1 on 75 minutes.
