FC Twente, currently second in the Dutch league, dropped two points at De Graafschap on Sunday but their position wasn’t threatened as Ajax crashed to a humiliating 4-1 defeat at Vitesse.
Blaise N’Kufo put Twente ahead on 24 minutes but De Graafschap’s Stephan Keller equalised two minutes later. Luuk de Jong then made it 2-1 seven minutes after the break.
Twente did avoid defeat as N’Kufo added a second goal from the penalty spot with seven minutes to go.
Ajax hoped to move back in second place today but stood no chance against Vitesse. Lasse Nilsson opened the score on seven minutes, but Luis Suarez reacted with the equaliser eight minutes later.
From then on Vitesse dominated though. Dalibor Stevanovic restored the lead in the 40th minute and Nilsson added another just before half time. The fourth and final goal came from Ricky van Wolfswinkel in the 68th minute.
PSV recorded their third win in a row, away to Volendam. Toivonen, Brechet, Mendez (2) and Bakkal scored for the defending champions, and Sheotahul, De Lange and Van Zaanen did so for the hosts, 3-5.
PSV’s Toivonen and Volendam’s Tuyp were sent off in the second half.
Leaders AZ extend their lead over Twente to 12 points with 12 games to go, and seem to be on their way to a first domestic title since 1981. Ajax follow at another two points.
