Marca reports the Catalans want the Argentina international to replace Manchester City bound Yaya Toure.
Mascherano is in talks with Internazionale as Liverpool seek to raise around €30 million from his sale.
The new Barca president Sandro Rosell is also planning to land Mascherano, who came close to joining the Blaugrana last summer.
