New York City have moved to suggest that they did not give up on attempting to recruit Barcelona icon Xavi Hernandez.
The MLS newcomers tried to sign the veteran midfielder in the summer, but the 34-year-old eventually opted to remain at Camp Nou for another season.
But, even though his current deal is due to expire in June 2016, Xavi is expected to consider his options at the end of the season having been rarely used by new boss Luis Enrique.
And it appears that a move to the MLS could be back on as New York City confirm they are still interested in the experienced footballer.
“It’s true that we tried to sign him (last summer), but next year we need new designated players,” New York City sporting director Claudio Reina told TV3.
“The door remains open (for Xavi). We won’t close the door on Xavi before next year.”
While former Spain striker David Villa has already joined New York City, Frank Lampard will follow in his footsteps at the end of the European season and it remains to be seen whether Xavi will join them as well.
