French daily newspaper L’Equipe has learned that New York City FC are closing in on French midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa.
The highly rated footballer was forced to rescind his contract with Nice on Tuesday, having already played for Newcastle and Hull City this season.
But, seeing as the FIFA rules do not apply to Major League Soccer clubs, New York City FC have expressed their interest in signing the 27-year-old footballer.
Ben Arfa is reportedly ready to move to the MLS and stay there until the summer before returning to European football.
New York City FC have already signed the likes of David Villa and Franck Lampard, and they could now recruit another high-profile footballer.
Hatem Ben Arfa has largely struggled for form since joining Hull City on loan from Newcastle United, making just eight Premier League appearances.
He was released from his contract at St James’ Park at the start of the New Year, but was eventually denied a chance to represent Nice.
