New Zealand striker Shane Smeltz blew a late chance for a penalty goal in a friendly against Honduras in Auckland Saturday, with the sides levelling at 1-1.
With the score at 1-1 after 89 minutes, Smeltz hit the crossbar, denying the All Whites a last-gasp victory against the Central Americans.
New Zealand, revelling in their first home display since the World Cup in South Africa, dominated the young Honduran side, which has been rebuilding after soccer’s showcase tournament.
The All Whites were the surprise package at the World Cup, entering with a ranking of 78th in the world but finishing as the only unbeaten team after draws in the group stage against defending champions Italy, as well as Slovakia and Paraguay.
