Heading into the encounter between Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers, it felt like a lot of people were talking about how similar they were when it came to their styles and overall quality. Despite being two very different clubs it was obvious to see that was true, as they matched one another in possession and shots. In the end, though, it was Nuno’s men who came away with the spoils in a game that certainly wasn’t without controversy.

Overcoming the odds

Newcastle were easily the better side in the early stages of the game, and they had their fair share of opportunities to take the lead but failed to do so. They were made to pay in that regard with Diogo Jota giving them the lead just before the break, although Ayoze Perez ensured that the lead didn’t last for all too long.

As the second half began it was clear to see that the Magpies were gaining in confidence, with many believing that it was only a matter of time until they took the lead. Unfortunately, at this level one moment of madness can cost you, and that’s pretty much what happened when DeAndre Yedlin made a poor error of judgement at the back and was given an early bath as a result. Rafa Benitez protested, but he probably won’t have too much to complain about when he watches it back.

Sucker punch

Wolves came into the game more and more after the red card but as time went on, it seemed like Newcastle would be able to come away with a point. Then, as the seconds ticked away, Wolves launched a counter in the final moments with Jota’s powerful shot being parried into the path of Matt Doherty – who headed the ball into an empty net to ensure the visitors would be heading back to the Black Country with what they came for.

Newcastle will now turn their attention towards a visit to Huddersfield Town next weekend, as Wolves attempt to keep their winning streak going against Bournemouth.
