Newcastle United are closing in on a deal to sign Ciaran Clark from Aston Villa, according to Sky Sports.
The North East club, who like Villa are preparing for a season in the second tier are eyeing reinforcements ahead of the new campaign and have identified Clark as one of their main targets.
Talks are ongoing between the two sides after Newcastle met the Republic of Ireland international’s release clause of £5m.
Clark has spent his entire career so far at Villa Park, racking up one hundred and fifty-nine appearances for the Midlands club in all competitions, scoring ten goals.
The twenty-six year old has been capped nineteen times for his country, scoring twice, with the last two of those appearances coming at this summer’s European Championships in France, with Martin O’Neill’s side eventually being eliminated by the hosts in the round of sixteen.
