Daily Mail has learned that Newcastle are stepping up their efforts to sign French midfielder Remy Cabella from Montpellier.
Even with his side struggling for form, the 23-year-old has been quite impressive this season, catching the eye of top European clubs in the process.
And after Manchester United expressed their interest in Cabella, Newcastle are the second side from English Premier League that have joined the chase.
The Magpies hope to continue the excellent run of results and they plan to sign Cabella as a potential replacement for Yohan Cabaye.
Montpellier president Louis Nicollin earlier suggested that an offer in the region of £14 million would prove sufficient to prize the midfielder away from the club, but the Magpies will try and lower the asking price.
Remy Cabella has made a total of 78 Ligue 1 appearances for Paillade after coming through the youth ranks at the club and has so far registered 16 goals.
