After having seen transfer targets stay as far away from St. James’ Park as possible this past year, Newcastle players are finally becoming deflated. Luka Modric and Jonathan Woodgate chose Tottenham ahead of Newcastle; Anton Ferdinand and Richard Dunne chose to stay at their respective clubs and now Pablo Aimar and Stephen Warnock are the latest player who will not join Kevin Keegan’s side.
Newcastle seemed to have the deal for Real Zaragoza playmaker Pablo Aimar all wrapped up before the player chose to move to Portuguese side Benfica instead, according to The Guardian.
“He is about to sign a contract with Benfica. Between Zaragoza and Benfica everything is sorted out. The doors are open for Aimar to become a Benfica player.” Said Luis Sol – a Zaragoza official – according to the same report.
The Independent claims that Newcastle have also failed in a bid to land Blackburn defender Stephen Warnock. According to the report Paul Ince rejected an offer of about £3 million from Newcastle for his full back.
Following this series of developments The Independent quoted Newcastle goalkeeper Steven Harper as saying: “We’re pretty depleted. We’ve lost four or five players and the dressing room is pretty sparse. New faces would give everyone a lift.”
