Newcastle handed Arsenal test in League Cup

Newcastle’s reward for their dramatic League Cup victory over English champions Chelsea is a home tie against Arsenal in the fourth round.

Chris Hughton’s side snatched a stunning 4-3 win at Chelsea in midweek thanks to Shola Ameobi’s last minute winner to earn a shot at the Gunners, who beat north London rivals Tottenham 4-1 at White Hart Lane in the third round.

League Two club Northampton, who shocked Liverpool with a penalty shoot-out triumph at Anfield in the last round, were drawn to play Championship team Ipswich at Portman Road.

Ian Sampson’s men are the only side from English’s football’s fourth tier left in the competition and the Cobblers’ boss believes his team, who also knocked out Reading this year, can claim a third surprise victory in the next round.

Sampson told Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday programme: “We’ll go to Ipswich and hopefully we can reproduce the form we’ve shown at Anfield and Reading.

“We’ve already knocked a Championship club out so we’ll go to Ipswich and try and do the same thing.”

Holders Manchester United were handed a home game against Wolves in Saturday’s draw.

League One team Brentford, who defeated Everton on penalties in the third round, travel to Birmingham looking for another Premier League scalp.

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez welcomes former club Swansea to the DW Stadium.

The other three ties see Aston Villa host Burnley, Championship club Leicester take on West Brom and Stoke travel to fellow Premier League strugglers West Ham.
