Newcastle are in talks with Unai Emery over the vacant managerial post at the club, according to multiple, reasonably credible sources.
The Magpies parted ways with Steve Bruce last month following the takeover by the Saudi-backed Public Investment Fund, and numerous names were mentioned as potential contenders for the job. As things stand, the club hierarchy have narrowed the selection down to two candidates. The other is Eddie Howe, but Emery is the one they prefer, and the only way for the former Bournemouth boss to step up on the list is if they fail to reach an agreement over personal terms with the Spaniard.
Emery is, of course, currently under contract with Villarreal, which has a year and a half left to run. It is believed that his proposed move would see the La Liga side cash in €6 million for his services.
Since Bruce’s departure, the team has been led by his former assistant, Graeme Jones.
