Desperate to close the gap on the top half of the A-League table, Newcastle Jets will host a struggling Melbourne City side on Friday morning.

Starting with the Jets, while Friday’s hosts might be some way off matching their second place finish in the A-League last season, Ernie Merrick’s side appears to have finally found their feet. Putting in another impressive display in Monday’s 3-1 win in the AFC Champions League, Newcastle’s 2-0 loss to league leaders Perth is their only defeat in 2019. If they are to mount a push for the top-six in the second half of the campaign, then Merrick will be looking for his side to carry on their recent run of form at McDonald Stadium. The Jets are enjoying a four-match unbeaten run on home soil and also picked up a 2-1 win the last time Melbourne came to town.

As for the visitors, slumping to a 1-1 draw at home to Adelaide United last weekend, Melbourne City have been drastically short of form entering February. Under the guidance of former Manchester United reserve team boss Warren Joyce, the Blues have failed to win any of their last three and their form away from AAMI Park will be a growing concern. Now sat 15 points adrift of Perth in the race for the A-League title, Melbourne have now lost their last three matches on the road, including a 2-1 loss to rock-bottom Central Coast Mariners last month.
