Newcastle are weighing up a January move for PSV Eindhoven striker Ola Toivonen, Daily Mirror has revealed.
The Magpies have been keeping close tabs on the Swedish footballer and they look ready to step up their interest.
Namely, with the striker’s deal at Philips Stadium set to expire at the end of the season, Newcastle hope to sign him for a nominal fee in January.
Nevertheless, PSV Eindhoven are holding out for £2.5 million, although they are expected to lower the asking price.
The Magpies are likely to face a stiff competition for the player’s signature from Fiorentina, who are rumoured to be in talks with Toivonen’s representatives over a move to Artemio Franchi.
PSV Eindhoven currently sit tied on points with Eredivisie leaders Twente, with Ajax trailing by just one point.
The Philips Stadium outfit are 13/8 to win the Eredivisie trophy and end Ajax’s three-year-long domestic domination.
