Premier League strugglers Newcastle United are eyeing a summer move on Schalke defender Joel Matip, according to Bild.
The Magpies are desperate to patch up the leaky defence in the summer and the latest reports suggest new manager Steve McClaren has made signing the Cameroon stopper his number one priority.
The former Wolfsburg coach has used his contacts in Germany to enquire about Matip and he is now convinced the 23-year-old would be a great addition to the squad at St James’ Park.
Bild has suggested that Newcastle are ready to offer around €14 million for the talented defender.
And with Matip’s contract due to expire in just over a year, there is a good chance the Magpies will eventually succeed in luring the centre-back to English Premier League.
Despite his fragile age, the Cameroon international already boasts substantial Bundesliga experience, having so far made 160 league outings for the Miners.
