Newcastle United F.C. have completed the signing of forward Ivan Toney from Northampton Town for an undisclosed fee.
Toney, 19, has penned a long-term deal at St James’ Park, becoming the Magpies’ fourth summer signing following the additions of Aleksandar Mitrović (Anderlecht), Chancel Mbemba (Anderlecht) and Georginio Wijnaldum (PSV Eindhoven).
“I’m happy to be here and very excited,” Toney told the club’s official website.
“The players here are a great standard and I can’t wait to get going and show what I’m all about.
“Being a young lad who is scoring goals in the Football League was a great thing. Now I want to progress here and eventually do it in the Premier League.”
Speaking about the player, Newcastle football development manager Peter Beardsley added: “We have been very impressed with Ivan already.
“He is a very good player, with great enthusiasm and a first-class attitude, and has all the attributes to have a bright future at the Club.”
Toney scored 10 goals in 44 appearances in all competitions for the Cobblers last season.
Mourinho: Costa not ready
Chelsea F.C. manager Jose Mourinho has revealed star striker Diego Costa is not ready to start Saturday’s English Premier League opener against Swansea City at Stamford Bridge.
The Spain international, 26, has suffered niggling hamstring problems for the past 18 months, but still tallied 20 goals and three assists in just 26 league appearances for the Blues last term.
“Costa is not ready. It is not a good feeling for him, it is not a good feeling for me,” Mourinho told reporters. “I have to be honest and say that it is a bit of a concern.
“A player that didn’t finish the season and doesn’t start the season obviously doesn’t make me happy.
“The boy is trying hard but he has a problem against Barcelona [International Champions Cup]. The scans show there is no injury so next day he trains, but the next day he is not comfortable.
“Then, 24 hours before the game [Community Shield against Arsenal], we don’t know if he plays or doesn’t play.”
With Costa doubtful to feature, Mourinho will likely turn to Loïc Rémy (2.20 to score anytime) or Radamel Falcao (2.50 to score anytime) lead the line against the Swans at the weekend.
