Newcastle striker and Serbia international Aleksandar Mitrovic could be set for a return to his former club Anderlecht on loan, in order to establish some consistent game time and a good run of form, according to Belgian publication HLN.
Mitrovic hasn’t really managed to force his way into the Newcastle starting XI since Rafa Benitez’s arrival in 2016, and now the striker could be set to return to his former club Anderlecht as the Magpies decide what to do with him.
The Serb has made just three appearances in all competitions this season for Newcastle and even during the long Championship campaign last season he featured just 25 times, scoring four goals.
Somewhat perplexingly Mitrovic has been in stunning form on the international stage, and has managed to retain his starting role for Serbia despite his lack of club football. However manager Slavoljub Muslin was recently sacked and now the striker’s role could be in doubt.
A return to Anderlecht, where Mitrovic scored 44 goals in 90 appearances, could be just what he needs to reignite his career and ensure his international involvement.
