Newcastle United 3-0 Wolves: Record-chasing Isak fires Magpies to victory

Newcastle United extended their Premier League winning streak to six successive games as Alexander Isak’s outstanding form continued in a 3-0 home win over relegation-battling Wolves.

Isak scored a goal in either half in front of a rapturous St James’ Park, with his 34th-minute opener making him just the fourth different player to net in eight successive Premier League matches, after Ruud van Nistelrooy, Jamie Vardy (twice apiece) and Daniel Sturridge.

Wolves hit the woodwork in the closing stages of both halves through Jorgen Strand Larsen, and saw a late Santiago Bueno effort disallowed for handball, but some poor defending proved costly for the visitors with Isak in rampant form once again for Newcastle.

Isak added an assist for Anthony Gordon’s clinching goal, as Newcastle leapfrogged Chelsea to go fourth in the table.

Eddie Howe’s Magpies are just three points behind Nottingham Forest, while Wolves slip below Ipswich Town on goal difference and into the relegation zone, ahead of the Tractor Boys hosting Brighton and Hove Albion on Thursday night.

Data Debrief: Isak has history in his sights

Isak’s double took him to 15 Premier League goals for the season so far, with only Erling Haaland (16) and Mohamed Salah (18) ahead of him in the current rankings, as he aims to beat his league tally of 21 from last season.

As his eye-catching consistency continues to break new ground, the former Real Sociedad forward can see history on the horizon, with his assist for Gordon bringing him up to 20 goal involvements for the campaign. He has a total of 14 goal involvements in his last eight league matches (11 goals, three assists).

Chasing down Vardy’s 2015 record of scoring in 11 straight Premier League games for Leicester City will not be easy, despite Isak’s red-hot form in front of goal. However, the fixture list could lend a helping hand, as Newcastle host Bournemouth this weekend followed by a trip to rock-bottom Southampton.

Goals in those games will level Isak with Van Nistelrooy’s best mark of 10 straight games with a goal in 2003, but he will need to fire again versus Fulham and Manchester City to take Vardy’s crown.
