Newcastle United linked with Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah

Newcastle United are interested in signing Jonathan Tah from Bayer Leverkusen in the January transfer window, according to Football Transfers. Tah has a release clause of €18 million in his contract at Bundesliga club Bayer, and Premier League outfit Newcastle are willing to trigger it.

Although Tah’s release clause does not come into play until the summer of 2024, Newcastle are ready to sign him in the middle of the season and could have to pay a similar amount. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe wants to sign a new defender in January to enhance his side’s chances of finishing in the top four of the Premier League table this season.

Newcastle are ninth in the Premier League table at the moment with 29 points from 19 matches. The Magpies are as many as eight points behind defending champions and fourth-placed Manchester City. Meanwhile, Bayer currently find themselves at the top of the Bundesliga table with 42 points from 16 matches.
