According to The Sun today, a source inside Newcastle has revealed that the Nigerian striker could become the first victim of a clamp down on the clubs wages.
The news is set to alert top clubs such as Arsenal, who have shown an interest in Martins for over a year; however Martins advisors have rejected the idea of the Nigerian leaving St. James Park.
The Sun’s source stated: “Martin’s future is uncertain. Newcastle are testing the water to see how stong the interest is. It’s suprising they would want to sell him, but there is a definite shift in the way the club are operatng”.
Martins, 23, is renowned for his exceptional pace and powerful shooitng ability, and has become a firm favourite at Newcastle. However it has been well publicised that the striker has a £13 million buy-out clause n his contract, which has attracted the attention of many top European clubs recently.
Newcastle were set to persuade Martins to stay by offering the Nigerian higher wages on a new contract, however this change in attitude towards players wages may see Martins on his way out at St. James Park.
This could mean further bad news for ‘Toon’ fans, as Michael Owen was hoping for a wage increase on his contract this season, and has been subject to speculation following Everton’s interest in the England striker.
