Newcastle´s Carroll fined for nightclub assault

Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll was fined on Monday after admitting assaulting a man in a nightclub.

Newcastle Crown Court heard he accidentally glassed a fellow clubber in the face when hurling a drink at him. The England under-21 international pleased guilty to common assault.

He was fined 1,000 pounds (1,570 dollars, 1,120 euros) and ordered to pay a further 2,500 pounds in compensation, plus 1,500 pounds of court costs.

The court in northeast England heard that Carroll, 21, threw his drink at Michael Cook. The glass slipped out of his hand, causing a deep cut to the other man’s eyebrow.

Cook required hospital treatment following the incident on December 7 last year.

“The prosecution accept you did not intend to injure Mr Cook, so that what happened to him was effectively an accident,” judge Esmond Faulks said.

“In these unusual circumstances I can proceed to deal with you by way of a financial penalty.”

In a separate case, Carroll was last week bailed on condition he live with Newcastle captain Kevin Nolan after appearing in court on a charge of assaulting an ex-girlfriend.

The long-haired forward has scored five goals in nine matches for the Magpies this season, putting him among the English Premier League’s leading scorers.

He headed a 69th-minute winner at Upton Park on Saturday as the visiting Magpies came from behind to beat West Ham United 2-1. Newcastle are ninth in the Premier League.

A graduate of Newcastle’s youth scheme, Carroll was the Magpies’ top scorer last season as they won the Championship and promotion to the top flight.
