Neymar is one of the most divisive players in the world of football. The PSG and Brazil star earns acclaim for his undoubted technical ability, while he is also often on the end of criticism due to his habit of play-acting.
It was his ability that persuaded French club PSG to pay a reported world record fee of around £200million to sign the Brazilian from Barcelona in 2017.
Has been a big success in France
Neymar was always in the shadow of Lionel Messi at Barcelona. He moved to PSG to be a star in his own right. He has achieved that in the last few seasons, although he has had to share the spotlight with French sensation Kylian Mbappe.
The French Ligue One is an inferior standard to La Liga, so it is unsurprising that Neymar has scored 32 goals in 33 appearances. He is arguably too good to be playing in the French top-flight, so he was always going to be prolific.
Despite reports to the contrary, Neymar is happy in Paris according to his father Neymar Sr, the Brazilian is set for talks about a contract renewal. Sky Sports quotes Neymar Sr saying “Neymar has made two transfers in his life, but we are speculating for 10 years. The probability of him not going is very high.
“He is in the second year of his contract. So, he has more than three years left on this contract and we are already talking about a renewal with Paris Saint-Germain”.
Where would he go?
Spanish giants Real Madrid have been linked with a move for the Brazilian since his big-money. A move to Spain seems to be the most likely, as a Spanish club is odds of 2/1 to sign Neymar next.
There are only two realistic options in Spain, in Los Blancos and a return to Barcelona. However, the latter looks unlikely. The Catalan giants seem to have moved on from the Brazilian international and would struggle to finance any deal for the forward, who is likely to cost big-money if he did leave the French capital.
Even a move to Madrid looks doubtful, as they have also been heavily linked with moves for Neymar’s PSG teammate Mbappe and Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, whose future in south west London is in big doubt.
Hazard looks the most likely summer arrival, simply because of his likely fee and the fact he seemingly wants to leave his current club. If Real Madrid do not make a move for the Brazilian, then there is probably no other club who have the financial resources or the desire to sign Neymar.
Neymar can become a legend in Paris
PSG are once again running away with the French Ligue One title this season. The team from the French capital are head and shoulders above every other team in their domestic league.
PSG’s quality virtually guarantees Neymar a title-winning medal each season. However, it is the Champions League that everybody connected with PSG wants to win in the near future. Neymar joined the French club to help them win Europe’s elite competition.
However, the Brazilian missed the last 16 tie against Manchester United through injury. The two-legged tie saw PSG exit the competition. If as expected, Neymar stays with the Parisian club next season, then winning the Champions League will be his and the team’s main objective.
If Neymar could help PSG to win the much-coveted trophy he would become a club legend at a club that has very few club legends. If he moves to Madrid, then he will not be as appreciated as in Paris, so maybe he is better off in the French capital.
