Niklas Moisander rejoins Ajax

Eredivisie side Ajax have announced the capture of defender Niklas Moisander from AZ Alkmaar.

The Finnish defender has signed a three-year deal with the Dutch champions for an undisclosed fee.

The 26-year-old arrives to Amsterdam ArenA as a replacement for Jan Vertonghen, who joined Tottenham earlier this summer.

“I am his successor. That is shown by my position and my number,” Moisander said to club’s official website.

“But to me Jan was the best player in the Eredivisie last season, so I am not going to try to copy him, but will fill his place in my own way. I have every faith that I will succeed in that.”

The talented defender had already spent two years with the Dutch giants, having joined the club in the summer of 2004 from Finnish side TPS.

However, Moisander left Ajax three years later without making a single appearance for the senior side, and was forced to start from scratch at lower division side Zwolle.

Two years later, the Finland international signed for AZ Alkmaar and it didn’t take him long to become one of the best central defenders in Dutch Eredivisie.
