Sir Alex Ferguson could not disagree with the sending off of centreback Jonny Evans in Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers.
Republic of Ireland international Evans was shown a straight red in the 75th minute of the English Premier League match at Old Trafford after a two-footed challenge on Bolton’s Stuart Holden.
Despite going down to 10 men, United snatched the win through a Dimitar Berbatov tap-in with three minutes to go.
Afterwards, Ferguson , who has come under the spotlight for his strong criticism of referees in recent weeks, did not take issue with the decision.
“Both players went for the same ball, with their feet raised, and Jonny caught the lad,” Ferguson said.
“Once you raise your feet you are putting yourself in a dangerous area. It was unfortunate but we cannot complain.”
Ferguson admitted his players were not at their best, but with an international break coming up, they will now have time to re-group ahead of the title run in.
“This was not a 100 percent top performance from us but we never gave in,” he said.
“That is what the character of this club is all about. No other club in the country has got that.”
“We are fantastic at gritting our teeth and getting something out of a dead situation.”
“We have two weeks now to try and patch up the injuries,” Ferguson said.
“That is the biggest break we have.”
“We should have Nemanja Vidic back for the West Ham game and also Darren Fletcher. I would love to have been able to bring Park Ji-Sung on today too.”
Bolton boss Owen Coyle confirmed that Holden – who was stretchered off after the Evans challenge – had been taken to hospital.
“I think the players reacted the way they did because a cut opened up on his knee,” Coyle said.
“We hope it is nothing worse than that and there is no break or ligament damage but we will only know when we get the results back from the hospital.”
