Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has no plans to retire anytime soon, even after becoming the club’s longest-serving manager.
Ferguson surpassed Sir Matt Busby’s record of 24 years, one month and 13 days on Sunday, and has every intention of continuing on for a 25th season.
The 68-year-old, who famously backtracked on plans to retire at the end of the 2001-2002 season, admits he has no idea when he will be ready to relinquish his reign at Old Trafford.
“The older you get the more worried you are about retiring,” Ferguson, who turns 69 on December 31, told MUTV.
“You start to realise that whilst you have got your health and good fitness, you should carry on in your job. All thoughts of retirement are in the back of my mind.”
“It (saying he was going to retire after 2001-2002) was a mistake. At the time there were some reasons for it. It was one of those things.”
“All thoughts of retirement are in the back of my mind.”
Ferguson has presided over the most successful period in the club’s history since taking over in 1986, and says his career at Old Trafford has exceeded all of his hopes and dreams.
“I could never have imagined that I would surpass Sir Matt’s longevity.” Ferguson told Key 103.
“When I came here, my main thought was to win the league and that was my driving force.”
“I couldn’t visualise that I would end up with 24 years behind me, going into my 25th year. I could never have imagined that in a million years.”
