Real Madrid chairman Florentino Perez insisted Friday that he is honoured to host the Champions League final, even though his side will not be there and rivals Barcelona are on course for a second straight title.
“We will do everything we can to make this final a success,” and to make Barcelona “feel at home,” if they reach the final, he said Friday.
The Champions League final is scheduled for May 22 at Real’s Santiago Bernabeu stadium.
But Real crashed out of the competition at the last-16 stage after losing to French side Lyon, despite a 250-million-euro summer spending spree – the bulk of it for world stars Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo.
If Barcelona beat Inter Milan in the semi-finals they could be playing in the final at the home of their arch-rivals. Lyon play Bayern Munich in the other semi-final.
“It is an honour to host the final of the Champions League,” Perez said.
