Hoping to get their EFL Trophy campaign off to a winning start in midweek, a high-flying Northampton will make the trip to a downbeat MK Dons on Tuesday night.
Starting with the hosts, really slumping back to their old ways before last year’s League One campaign was brought to an early halt, MK Dons really have the feel of a club in a crisis. Putting in a string of extremely worrying displays during their summer preparations, the Whites came crashing out of the League Cup thanks to a 1-0 defeat at home against Coventry last weekend. Hit with a pair of 6-0 and 4-1 drumming at the hands of Norwich and Arsenal respectively last month, Russell Martin’s men have failed to win any of their last 10 contests carrying on from last season and are a side desperately seeking a morale-boost. Ending last year’s interrupted campaign with a 1-0 defeat at home against Doncaster back in March, the Dons have also failed to win any of their five pre-season contests at Stadium MK and could be in for another tricky test in midweek.
As for the visitors, managing to book their spot in League One thanks to a thumping 4-0 win against Exeter at an empty Wembley back in June, Northampton really find the mood in their camp at a red-hot high. Enjoying what has been a stunning purple patch in front of goal either side of football’s enforced break, Keith Curle’s side also shocked many with what was another thumping display over the weekend. Really cruising past Championship play-off contenders Cardiff in the League Cup and laying down a marker in their empathic 3-0 win, Northampton will undoubtedly travel to Buckinghamshire boosted by their most recent meetings against Tuesday’s hosts. Landing a 2-1 win when they last faced off against MK Dons last year, don’t be surprised to see a similar outcome in midweek.
