Norwich close in on ´safety´ mark

Norwich manager Paul Lambert said he was ‘over the moon’ after his side inched closer to survival with a 2-1 victory over Wolves.

Two goals from Grant Holt, who was later sent off, secured three points for Norwich, who are now just one point away from the traditional 40-point mark needed to stay up.

The Canaries have surpassed all expectations this season having won consecutive promotions from League One up to the Premier League.

“The players have been absolutely brilliant, not just this year but in previous years – two years ago we were playing League One teams, and now we’re nearly at 40 points in the Premier League,” Lambert said.

“I’m over the moon to win – it’s a massive win for us. I’m delighted for the team and proud as anything for what they’ve done.

“Wolves, similar to Wigan, are probably finding it easier to win away from home at the minute. So I knew it was going to be a difficult game but I’m delighted with the team.

“I don’t feel confident until we’re mathematically safe. You want to keep driving on and finish as high as you can.”

Norwich had to come from behind to secure victory, with Holt equalising just 85 seconds after Matt Jarvis had given Wolves the lead in the first half.

“We’ve got the ability to do that. It takes a big effort to go and turn a game around,” Lambert added.

“To do it the way we’ve done it was excellent – I thought some of the football we played in the first half was excellent. We passed it really well, and adapted to a different system.”

Wolves caretaker boss Terry Connor was happy with his side’s ‘fighting spirit’ despite falling to a fourth-straight loss.

“It was a really good performance and we showed a real fighting spirit,” Connor said.

“We showed everything you would want. We took the lead and I thought we were well worth something from the game.

“If we put in the same determination, effort and spirit that we showed in this game, with a little more quality in the final third in terms of our crossing and shooting, then I think we will be okay.”
