(GSM) – Walter Novellino has claimed that Roma captain Francesco Totti was a key figure to decide when the Serie A giants appointed Luciano Spalletti in 2005.
The former Sampdoria coach believes that his appointment was blocked by Totti due to personal differences.
“I could never be the coach of Roma, as Totti doesn’t like me,” he told Radio Marte. “A few years ago, when I was considered one of the best Italian managers, I was meant to join the Giallorossi.
“In the end, they signed Luciano Spalletti. It seems to me that Totti made the decision – therefore, he doesn’t like me.
“I wish all the best to Claudio Ranieri, as it’s not easy for him. The difficulties at the club are making an impact and he is on his own.”
Meanwhile, Roma president Rosella Sensi has banned Ranieri and the players from talking to the media during the international break.
Roma are currently second bottom of Serie A, and Sensi believes speaking to the press will do nothing to help improve fortunes at the club.
In an official statement, she said: “I think that in moments of difficulty, especially in sport, work is the best medicine.
“We must all give an answer with actions and not words. Those come through the training ground, sweat in the gym, eating healthily and good behaviour.
“In sport, the team is what counts, and that is why we’ll all come out of this situation together. There is silence in the media, but everyone can express themselves on Saturday October 16 against Genoa.”
