With the domestic leagues only returning from the international break last week, Europe’s premier tournament gets back underway on Tuesday night as the Champions League group stages kick-off.
Watching Chelsea shock many from across the continent as they grabbed a 1-0 win against fellow English heavyweights Manchester City back in May, teams from across Europe will be looking to write their own piece of history this season.
With the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo’s Manchester United making their return to the main stage this year, we have taken a look at who the bookmakers have billed as the pre-tournament favourites.
PSG – 4/1
While PSG might have seen Lille shockingly snatch their Ligue 1 crown last season, the French giants have enjoyed a summer overhaul that will live long in the transfer window memory books.
With Mauricio Pochettino given a huge amount of backing over the summer, Les Parisiens have brought in the likes of Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Achraf Hakimi, and most notably six-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi in what turned out to be a record-breaking window.
With many from across Europe believing that PSG have assembled the most stacked squad that has been seen in recent times, it is no surprise that the former Tottenham boss finds his side in the midst of a real purple patch.
Storming their way to the top of the Ligue 1 table and yet to drop a single point from any of their first five matchups since opening the 2021/22 campaign, PSG are already priced at 4/1 with 888sport to claim their first Champions League crown, despite sharing a group with the likes of Manchester City and RB Leipzig.
Manchester City – 9/2
Despite opening May’s Champions League final showdown against Chelsea out in Portugal as a standout pick to lift their first European title, the Sky Blues’ wait only goes on as they suffered a 1-0 loss against their fellow Premier League powerhouses.
However, despite opening the 2021/22 campaign with a sluggish 1-0 defeat away at Tottenham, Pep Guardiola’s defending English champions have bounced back in some style and are once again tipped as a leading pick when their Champions League adventure gets underway against Leipzig on Tuesday night.
With their Spanish boss now going over a decade since he last lifted a European title during his days at the Nou Camp, City are now enjoying a three-match Premier League winning run, a run that also saw them land a 1-0 victory away at Leicester over the weekend.
Doing a great job of sharing the goals around their squad after missing out on their public pursuit of England skipper Harry Kane over the summer, Guardiola’s side open their European run in midweek priced at 9/2 with Betfair to finally capture what has been a long-awaited Champions League crown.
Bayern Munich – 44/5
Crashing out of last year’s Champions League at the quarter-final stage after getting hit with an action-packed defeat at the hands of PSG, Bayern Munich have begun a new adventure over the summer after bringing in the now-former RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann.
Storming their way back to the top of the Bundesliga table and tipped as a standout pick to make even more domestic history this season, the German giants picked up some perfect momentum over the weekend as Nagelsmann’s star-studded squad picked up a 4-1 win at his former employers.
Opening this year’s tournament priced at 44/5 with Unibet to reclaim their European crown this time around, Bayern open their run with what should be a real mouth-watering affair as they make the trip out to fellow former European champions Barcelona on Tuesday night.
If Bayern are to lift this year’s Champions League, then they will be calling on the red-hot Robert Lewandowski to spearhead their charge. Once again finding the net against Leipzig over the weekend, the Polish talisman has 11 goals for club and country so far this season and is priced at 5/1 with Betfair to claim the Golden Boot.
