Olympiakos defender Olof Mellberg has revealed that he plans to retire from international football after the European Championship in Poland and Ukraine.
The 34-year-old is still considered an important part of the national team set-up and he has featured in 6 Euro 2012 qualifiers.
The veteran defender is expected to start Sweden’s first game at the Euro 2012, although there is every chance that he will retire from international football immediately after the tournament.
Mellberg has told Swedish television SVT on Monday that Euro 2012 “will definitely be my last” major tournament.
The towering defender has earned folk hero status in the national team, having amassed 112 caps for Sweden, scoring no less than 7 goals in the process.
Mellberg took part in five major tournaments since making his national team debut in 2000 and this will be his fourth successive European Championship finals.
The former Aston Villa captain has spent last three years at Olympiakos, winning three consecutive league titles with the Greek giants.
