The Dutch Olympic team will have to do without captain Roy Makaay for the remainder of their tournament. The striker suffered a minor fracture in his right foot.

Makaay injured his foot during the opening group match with Nigeria but did make an appearance in the remaining two games.

This was much to the dismay of Feyenoord manager Gert Jan Verbeek, although both Netherlands coach Foppe de Haan and the player himself stress that those appearances did not worsen the injury.

The player is positive about a quick return: “I expect to return to the pitch soon, because I can walk, sprint and jump without problems. I just can’t shoot properly.”

The Dutch play their quarter final match with Argentina on Saturday.
