Looking to potentially climb to the top of the League One table on Thursday night, Sunderland will host Sheffield Wednesday at the Stadium of Light.

Starting with the hosts, while Sunderland might have seen their EFL Cup run come to an abrupt end against Arsenal earlier in the month, Lee Johnson’s side really bounced back last time out. Storming their way to a thumping 3-0 win away at Doncaster and with the mood in their camp likely to once again be at a real high, the former Bristol City boss also finds his side sat in pole position to secure a Championship return this season. Knowing that another victory on Thursday night could see them climb to the top of the League One table, Sunderland have also continued to impress on home soil. Landing back-to-back 2-1 and 5-0 romps against Plymouth and Morecambe on their December run, there is no doubt that Johnson’s men will be desperate to lay down another marker at the Stadium of Light here.

As for the visitors, last seen earlier in the month picking up a deserved 2-0 win against Crewe on the road, Sheffield Wednesday really have their sights set on making a charge for the play-off spots in 2022. While the Owls might have suffered a shock 3-0 drumming against Hartlepool on EFL Trophy duties on December 1st, Darren Moore’s men have lost just a single League One contest since a 2-1 loss against Oxford at the start of October. While Wednesday might open as an outside pick in midweek, they will be boosted by their rampant last meeting against the Black Cats. Storming their way to a stellar 3-0 victory when the two sides faced off back on November 2nd, we’re backing another lively affair here.
