Just about crawling over the finish line this summer, a stalling Sydney FC will make the trip across town to the ANZ Stadium when they meet a resurging Adelaide on Thursday morning.
Starting with Thursday’s temporary hosts, after enduring what was a woeful four-match losing run prior to March’s enforced break, few across the A-League would have expected Adelaide’s remarkable return to action. Keeping the mood in their camp at a real high in free-scoring fashion last week, Carl Veart’s men picked up a thumping 5-3 win against former champions Perth at the Bankwest Stadium and once again find themselves sat in pole position to clinch another top-six finish. While Adelaide might have still struggled with some defensive issues throughout this year and managed to record just a single clean sheet over their previous seven A-League contests, they do have one attacker enjoying a recent purple patch. Once again finding the net against Perth last time out, 30-year-old Kristian Opseth has found the net in each of his three top-flight appearances since making a return to action last month.
As for the visitors, while Sydney might have managed to wrap up this year’s A-League campaign with time to spare, it does not cover what has been a worrying rut. Putting in another sluggish display last time out, Steve Corica’s side were hit with a 2-0 defeat against Melbourne City and have now suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time this season. Although the Blues might be showing some real issues at the back, they do hold a fearsome record against the midweek temporary hosts. Including a 2-1 win when they last met Veart’s men back in January, Sydney have now won each of their last four meetings against Adelaide. In a contest that should prove to be another lively contest at the ANZ Stadium, Adelaide and Sydney also have a habit of producing fireworks. With four of the last five meetings between the two sides producing over 2.5 goals, we’re backing a similar outcome on Thursday.
Bet: Over 2.5 goals at Adelaide United vs Sydney FC 7/10 for Thursday’s A-League showdown @ 888sport
