In a contest that famously produces plenty of chances, Wellington Phoenix know that three points is a must as they make their season finale against a high-flying Newcastle Jets on Thursday morning.
Starting with the Jets, continuing to shine since returning from the enforced break and really in the midst of an extended purple patch, the mood in Carl Robinson’s camp should be at a real high. Arguably transforming into the A-League’s in-form outfit this summer, Newcastle once again impressed in their 1-0 win against fellow high-flyers Western United last week and have now collected 10 points over just their last four appearances. While a torrid start to the campaign might have wiped any chance of a late top-six finish off the table, the former Wales international has seen his side remarkably lose just a single A-League contest in any of their previous 12 outings, a run that stems all the way back to January 24th. With their recent run highlighted by a stunning 2-1 win against runaway leaders and AFC Champions League outfit Sydney FC last month, the Jets will be looking to sign off their season in style on Thursday morning.
As for Wellington, really struggling to find their feet since returning from football’s enforced break, the Phoenix know that they need a real turnaround if they’re to somehow break into the AFC Champions League spots. Leaving it late and having to settle for a point against Brisbane last time out, the New Zealand outfit have managed to win just one of their five A-League contests since the restart and still sit three points adrift of Melbourne City and that lucrative second-spot. However, there is no doubt that Head Coach Ufuk Talay will be boosted by his side’s eye-catching record against the Jets. Including a thumping 4-1 win last season, the Phoenix have secured back-to-back wins and have collected 10 points over their last four meetings against Newcastle. With just the last two meetings between Thursday’s opponents producing eight goals, we’re backing what should be another lively encounter as the A-League campaign signs off this week.
Bet: Over 2.5 goals at Newcastle Jets vs Wellington Phoenix 8/11 for Thursday’s A-League matchup
