Competition: Europa League
Market: Over 2.5 goals
Odds: 7/10 @ 888sport
In a Europa League showdown that could see a string of chances on Thursday night, Spanish outfit Villarreal will make the trip to Salzburg’s Red Bull Arena in midweek.
Starting with the hosts, eventually cruising their way to a 4-2 romp away at Swarovski Tirol last weekend, Salzburg have only continued on what has been a free-scoring purple patch. Really finding their feet after returning from the festive break last month, the Austrian giants are once again tipped as a standout contender to reclaim their Bundesliga crown. Winning each of their last six domestic matchups across all formats, Head Coach Jesse Marsch will be boosted by his side’s remarkable form in front of goal. Bagging themselves a quartet of strikes on their travels last weekend, the former New York Red Bulls boss has seen his side land a staggering 17 goals on their six-match winning run. With the red-hot Patson Daka bagging a brace last weekend and with 11 goals in his last 10 appearances, chances could come thick and fast on Thursday night.
As for the visitors, while Villarreal might have found themselves enjoying a remarkable unbeaten run before the festive break, the Yellows are in the midst of a recent sluggish patch. Eventually getting hit with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Real Betis on home soil last weekend, Head Coach Unai Emery has seen his side endure a five-match La Liga winless run. Slipping out of the top-four, there is no doubt that the former Arsenal boss will be desperate for his squad to make some much-needed alterations at the back. However, while they might be seeking a European boost on foreign soil, the Spanish side should at least take some solace from their most previous meeting against Thursday’s hosts. Landing themselves a 3-1 victory when they faced off against Salzburg back in 2015, we’re backing what could be another high-scoring outcome in midweek.
