Competition: EFL Trophy
Market: Over 2.5 goals
Odds: 19/20 @ Bet 365
Two sides dreaming of a trip to Wembley later in the season, Salford will welcome fellow fourth-tier outfit Port Vale to the Peninsula Stadium on Tuesday night.
Starting with the hosts, while back-to-back victories over Crewe Oldham may have had Salford believing they could mount a play-off charge in 2020, Graham Alexander’s men have since come crashing back down to earth. Despite arguably saving their best performances this season for the EFL Trophy, fans around the Peninsula saw their side hit with a 2-1 defeat against Walsall over the weekend and they were also shocked to see a struggling Grimsby snatch three points on New Year’s Day. While Salford have continued to find the net at a steady rate, the former Scunthorpe boss will be concerned by his side’s issues at the back. The Reds have failed to record a single clean sheet in any of their previous seven matches on the bounce.
As for the visitors, while Port Vale may have picked up what was a famous strike away at defending Premier League champions Manchester City over the weekend, John Askey’s men did eventually come crashing out of the FA Cup thanks to an expected 4-1 hammering. However, while no team in League Two may have had to settle for a point more than Port Vale this season, they do have a growing reputation for their rugged displays. Scoring a pair of goals in each of their last three appearances against fourth-tier opposition, they have also lost just a single League Two matchup on the road since the 12th of October. With six of the last eight combined matches between Salford and Port Vale seeing over 2.5 strikes at full-time, we’re backing a similar outcome in midweek.
