Two sides looking to sign off this year’s A-League campaign with three points, Western United and Melbourne City will meet at the Netstrata Jubilee Stadium on Wednesday morning.
Starting with Western United, making yet another statement and picking up a 2-1 victory against runaway leaders Sydney FC last week, the mood in Mark Rudan’s camp remains sky-high. Already securing themselves a spot in the Final Series and knowing they could clinch a bronze medal finish with victory in Sydney on Wednesday morning, the Green and Blacks have won their last three A-League contests on the bounce and have collected a stunning 18 points over just their last seven appearances. With an ever-growing reputation for their performances in the final third, one man to keep an eye out for in midweek will be red-hot leading marksman, Besart Berisha. Once again finding the net against Sydney last week, the 35-year-old veteran has recorded four A-League strikes in just his last three contests and will once again lead the line on Wednesday.
As for Melbourne City, throwing away a two-goal lead against Adelaide and eventually having to settle for a point at the ANZ Stadium, the Sky Blues simply have their sights set on ending the year on a high after securing another AFC Champions League finish. Also picking up their own victory against the runaway leaders when opening August, Head Coach Erick Mombaerts has seen his men lose just one of their last seven A-League contests, a run that also saw them pick up 4-2 and 3-2 wins against Perth and Central Coast. In a contest that should produce a string of chances at the Netstrata Jubilee Stadium, it is also worth highlighting that the two sides played out a five-goal thriller when they faced off back in January.
